Our Wednesday sessions in Surbiton are back! We have a unique term planned for our junior players, focusing on different themes and skills to help everyone improve their game.
When: Every Wednesday
Target Ages: 5–18 years old
Levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced
January 7th: Special Opening Session with Mr Briscoe All Levels: Welcome back! A focused session with Mr Briscoe to kick off the New Year. We will be setting personal goals and jumping straight into friendly competitive games to shake off the holiday rust.
January 14th: The King’s Court 👑 Beginner: Learning how the King moves and the basics of "Check" and "Checkmate."
Intermediate: King safety and how to use your King as a powerful attacker in the endgame.
Advanced: Studying the "Castled King" and how to launch a successful kingside attack.
January 21st: Piece Power Play ⚡ Beginner: Understanding the value of each piece and when to trade them.
Intermediate: Learning the strengths of Knights versus Bishops in different positions.
Advanced: The art of the "Exchange Sacrifice"—giving up a Rook for a minor piece to gain an advantage.
January 28th: Sneaky Traps & Tricks 🪤 Beginner: How to spot and avoid the most common "Scholar’s Mate" traps.
Intermediate: Learning the "Fried Liver Attack" and how to defend against it.
Advanced: Studying opening traps in the Queen’s Gambit and the Slav Defense.
February 4th: The Mid-Game Maze 🌀 Beginner: Learning to look for "unprotected pieces" on the board.
Intermediate: Introduction to "Space Advantage"—how to squeeze your opponent.
Advanced: Strategic planning and identifying long-term targets in the middle of the game.
February 11th: Speed Chess Challenge ⏱️ Beginner: A fun introduction to "Rapidplay" and using a timer.
Intermediate: Learning to play "Blitz" without losing focus or making blunders.
Advanced: Masterclass on time pressure and making "practical" decisions when low on time.
